Things to do in Indonesia
Check out Jakarta
One of the most modern cities in Indonesia, Jakarta is a bustling city where you can experience trendy restaurants, vintage clothing stores and cool coffee shops. It’s also steeped in important Indonesian culture and history—learn more by visiting the monuments, old town and mosques and cathedrals.
Fall in love with Bali
There’s no denying Bali is Indonesia’s crown jewel, and for good reason. Enjoy stunning beaches all over the island; explore the temples, reasonably priced day spas and the natural beauty of Ubud; and indulge in a little hedonistic fun in hip tourist areas of Kuta, Seminyak and Canggu. Like to surf? Waves abound all over Indonesia, and one of the most accessible and famous surf spots is Uluwatu, just south of Kuta.
Island getaways
While Bali is top of the island hit list, it’s also not far from Lombok island and the beautiful Gili Islands archipelago. Think palm tree lined beaches and bungalows on the beach. Head to Gili Trawangan (aka Gili T) for learning to dive by day and letting your hair down at a dance party by night. Komodo Island is fast becoming a must-do Indonesia destination with its Instagram-worthy Pink Beach.
Eat all the foods
There’s no shortage of dining in Indonesia, from street foods to westernised cafes and restaurants. Eat amazing vegan food in Ubud, get your fix of satay skewers (the national dish of Java) and get ready to sample every kind of curry flavour under the sun. Must try dishes include Gado-Gado, rendang and nasi goreng. Plus, in Bali, you’ll find some of the most colourful acai bowls you’ve ever laid eyes on.
Up in the clouds
Indonesia is a geographical marvel, made up of over 100 volcanoes, the region lends itself to some impressive mountain formations and stunning landscapes to explore. From Bali, a sunrise trek up Mount Batur comes highly recommended, as does Mount Agung where you can admire Bali’s coastline from the peak. Mount Bromo is up there as the most iconic in the country, where you can peek inside the crater and of the volcano and watch it’s sulphurous smoke spout out.
